New Way Academy provides grade level curriculum based on Arizona State Standards while intensively remediating areas of individual challenge. Student learning plans based on the results of comprehensive assessments and classroom performance address specific needs while building on strengths. Speech-language therapy and occupational therapy are provided during the school day when needed. Art, physical education, and social groups supplement the academic program.
Visitors often express surprise at how calm, happy, and engaged New Way students are in their classes. Students are actively involved with lessons that engage multiple senses. Every feature of the classroom from the color of the walls to the arrangement of furniture is carefully designed to enhance learning. Visual distractions are minimized and acoustics are optimized with assistive technology and sound blocking materials.
Students are assigned to a homeroom according to age, social maturity, and academic learning style. They work in groups of two to twelve following a schedule of classes designed to meet their individual goals. State of the art technology including SMART Boards© in all classrooms, two computer labs, and laptops support learning.
New Way Academy maintains high standards for student conduct and responsibility using a positive discipline approach. The school day includes breaks for outdoor play and social interaction with peers and teachers. A variety of clubs, sports, and extracurricular activities enrich the school experience.
